Cyanotypes Workshop

  • Art Produce 3139 University Avenue San Diego, CA, 92104 United States (map)

Discover the magic of cyanotypes, also known as sun prints, in this hands-on workshop exploring the creative possibilities of light, shadow, and silhouette. Using everyday objects and your own two- or three-dimensional designs, you'll create unique images on fabric through the cyanotype process. A selection of blue, white, and multi-colored cyanotype fabrics will be provided.

Participants are encouraged to experiment, play, and enjoy the process of discovery while creating multiple small- or medium-scale prints. Finished cyanotypes can later be incorporated into quilts, clothing, bags, mixed-media projects, or displayed as artwork.

Elijah Rubottom is a San Diego-based visual artist and teacher who primarily makes art from patterned concrete building blocks (breezeblocks), cyanotypes, and ceramic sculptures. In recent years he has begun to incorporate textile and fabric-based methods into his practice while exploring social justice and political themes. A tenant with Space 4 Art for several years, Elijah holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Sculpture, 2000) from The Rhode Island School of Design.

This free workshop is provided by Space 4 Art and sponsored by The Prebys Foundation. The Arts Ecosystem grant aims to bring more art funding to the San Diego Art Economy. The grant is part of the Prebys Foundation’s 2025 Emergency Arts Investment, which responds to significant challenges facing the region’s arts sector, including federal and state funding cuts, rising operational costs, and the need to preserve vital community spaces for creativity.
