Space 4 Art Takes STEAM Out of the Classroom and Into the Community.

We integrate civic involvement and economic development into an educational program that enhances creative thinking and introduces students to possible career paths. In our community arts programs, S4A’s cross-disciplinary artists invite kids to step out of the classroom and into their neighborhoods. Projects range from building a park in a vacant lot to constructing temporary studio spaces for artists to collaborative art-making, reflecting on both individual and community identities.

Crawford High School

Linda Litteral worked with approximately 100 students, leading an eight-week design series that culminated in a public art installation. Students engaged in a healing-art process while creating individual tiles and worked collaboratively to design and install six benches and several wall pieces in the school garden.

High Tech High School

Students were tasked with building artists' tiny homes for eventual use in Space 4 Art's community-based Arts Center. They were mentored through the entire process, from concept to design/architectural modeling to the final build, onsite at S4A. See the project in action here!

Space 4 Art Build-Out

In 2009, Space 4 Art signed a lease for three adjacent warehouses located in San Diego’s East Village. For six months, professionals worked with volunteers in a series of “community builds," fabricating modular panels and outfitting each studio to match the tenants' artistic needs.

Behind the Scenes of a Community Build

"Linda taught us to express ourselves with complete freedom."

Benson, Senior at Crawford High School

"Before working with Linda, many of us only painted what we thought others wanted to see."
