ADJACENT POSSIBLE II Request for Proposals
“Creativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected.” - Author William Plomer
SPACE 4 ART is seeks artists, scientists and educators to create one of five arts-based experiences for the ADJACENT POSSIBLE II. An experience may include performance and/or exhibition.
The concept for the exhibition and performances is the adjacent possible. When applied to the arts, the term the adjacent possible defines the space that is created when two dissimilar entities interact. Loosely, it’s the possibilities that exist in the meeting grounds. It can occur when chemistry meets painting, math meets intrinsic values, or when aeronautics meets song. The strange and beautiful truth about the adjacent possible is that its boundaries grow as you explore them. Each new combination opens up the possibility of other new combinations.
Proposals should demonstrate the adjacent possible by combining a minimum of 2 art forms along with a demonstrable STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) concept. Teams are encouraged to be creative with this concept. In an effort to support regional STEAM efforts (Arts into STEM), preference may be given to those that demonstrate a connection to San Diego such as the bio-tech industry, wireless technology and the theme of “water and the mismatch between supply and demand.”
Each team must consist of a minimum of 2 artists and 1 scientist or STEM educator.
Each team is responsible for the costs of its experience. Pending final approval from the City and County, it is estimated that each of the 5 teams selected will receive $1,000 for artistic participation to execute their vision.
ADJACENT POSSIBLE II will take place as a two-part event in October. The first event will take place at SPACE 4 ART with the second being held at a North County site to be finalized. Teams must agree to present at both locations including a special preview at SPACE 4 ART for Space 4 Art, Synergy Arts Network, City and County VIPS to be held.
Each experience at SPACE 4 ART will take place in at least one of three areas, including indoor gallery, outdoor stage and yard/parking area. The second event in North County will most likely be limited in space and consideration should be given to how the experience can be mobile or replicated in part to accommodate.
ADJACENT POSSIBLE II is a follow up to 2010’s Adjacent Possible event. This project is being supported by SAN DIEGO SYNERGY ARTS NETWORK, CITY OF SAN DIEGO ARTS & CULTURE COMMISSION and COUNTY OF SAN DIEGO BOARD OF SUPERVISORS.
