SPACE 4 ART PRESENTS  The Desperate Characters of Mercer County: A Panoramic Theatrical Experience

Conceived by Jenna Ann MacGillis Music Direction by Clint Davis

Join us this summer to experience a time, nearly two hundred years ago, with Nancy York, a pioneer ancestor long forgotten until now. In an intimate site-specific performance at Space 4 Art, memories are constructed as living dreams from a different time and place – an older, weirder America. The Desperate Characters of Mercer County incorporates sculptural manipulation, an Americana house band, and story telling both fabricated and true. Guests will be welcomed by Ben and Nancy as they serve up their small slice of the old America, alive again to tell it. Their story begins and ends in Mercer County, Missouri, where their civilized ways were lost to the dirt, where deep roots were laid and where redemption could be found in the baptismal waters along Thompson's River amongst the desperate characters – card players, moonshiners, and horse thieves.

The Collaborators

Jenna Ann MacGillis received an M.A. in Arts and Leadership from New College of California in San Francisco's Mission District.  As co-founder of Community Action Media Lab she was introduced to mask-making and a variety of movement practices through collaborative projects with Bay Area artists and instructors. She has exhibited and performed her mask creations in galleries and art centers in California, Colorado, and Oregon. Residing now in San Diego, Jenna Ann MacGillis lives and creates at Space 4 Art, an artists' community located in the East Village. Working now within the realm of Visual Theatre she has had the opportunity to create two new works for Animal Cracker Conspiracy's Adult Puppet Cabaret.  Desperate Characters of Mercer County, conceived and directed by Jenna Ann MacGillis, was first premiered Fall of 2012 as a site-specific work. Her current performance work continues to explore challenging combinations of visual art, movement, and theatre.

Clint Davis is a composer and performer from the state of Kentucky. His work ranges from traditional American folk idioms to experimental electronic practices. He has composed music for theater companies on both coasts, including Brooklyn's Lone Wolf Tribe and the San Diego's Old Globe in productions that have toured the United States, Europe, and South America. Currently he leads the G. Burns Jug Band, which specializes in 30's-era jug band music of Memphis, and he also performs with the electronic noise and drone outfit No Fancy.
