Glottalopticon: Experimental Opera Series
8 PM - $15/$10 STUDENT, SENIOR, OR MILITARY
Glottalopticon is dedicated to presenting new, experimental, and rarely performed works that expand the traditional definition of opera. The series showcases performers, composers, and artists whose professional careers center on experimentation and collaboration. It offers San Diego audiences the unique opportunity to experience exceptional talent through a varied and eclectic range of music-theatre in the intimate and comfortable setting of the SPACE 4 ART outdoor stage and gallery spaces. Presented with minimal trappings in a casual environment, the audience is invited to experience this art form liberated from opera house expectations.
Glottalopticon launches its inaugural season of experimental operas on May 10, 2013 at 8 pm with Australian singer, Jessica Aszodi, performing three short operas:
Jeanette Little’s Mechanical Bride, based upon Enrico Cavacchioli’s 1914 poem Let The Moon Be Damned, will receive its world premiere with this performance. The piece takes the audience to a dystopian future where humans find solace in machines while the natural world dies around them.
Jeffrey Treviño’s Orbiting showcases the plight of a condemned woman as she spends her final hours in a space capsule in the distant future..
Bruno Ruviaro’s Unspell, based upon Roland Barthe’s A Lover’s Discourse, explores the anxiety of a lover waiting upon another. The piece will be performed in English, French and Portuguese.
Tickets may be purchased at the door - $15 or $10/student, senior, or military.
The series will continue on 8/31, 9/27, 11/1 and 1/4/14 with two premieres and three rarely heard works.
