Medium | .me·di·um | ˈmēdēəm (noun)
The intervening substance through which impressions are conveyed to the senses or a force acts on objects at a distance.

“Physiologically, man in the normal use of technology (or his variously extended body) is perpetually modified by it and in turn finds new ways of modifying his technology. Man becomes, as it were, the sex organs of the machine world, as the bee of the plant world, enabling it to fecundate and evolve ever new forms.”
 - Samuel Butler, Erewhon: Or, Over the Range, 1872

The technologies that connect information across the globe have become so vastly encompassing as to be difficult to see. These global networks have begun to obliterate boarders of all kinds including the boarders that constitute the self. In order to gain new perspective on some of these mediums of information I transform modern technological imagery into human scaled environments. These environments themselves become a medium for expressing the conflict of identity as the self distorts, multiplies, and dissolves into the collective consciousness.

Chris Warr Returns to San Diego with a New Body of Work Embracing Uncertainty

For this final exhibition, the curatorial committee invited Space 4 Art co-founder and former curator, Chris Warr, to exhibit work he has developed since moving from San Diego to Los Angeles last year.

SHIFTER features paintings and sculptures that embrace uncertainty and genuine curiosity. A carpenter by trade, Chris Warr’s work has been known for its physicality and the occasional use brute force on stubborn materials. For the last year, he has abandoned force and allowed himself to move freely through a variety of methods and media to produce new work. He has painted, photographed, carved, cast, built, and disassembled objects from image to abstraction and abstraction to structure. Moving between multiple projects and not forcing outcomes, has resulted is refreshingly honest work showing a softer more relaxed relationship with the materials and, perhaps, himself.

The opening event will feature Open Studios and will be the last opportunity to tour the entire facility. See more information about the event here.
