Fresh Sound Series

Spring Season » Focus on New York

Fresh Sound is not stuck in any particular style of music but is dedicated to bringing to San Diego music that is new, and as we proclaim, fresh. We plan to lavish you with glorious sounds, therefore we’ll just say that the music will be composed and improvised, acoustic and electronic, contemporary and traditional; the concerts will include music which grooves and doesn’t, is really loud and very quiet, some familiar and often not. All of it will be delicious and will leave you hungering for more.

As Fresh Sound series consists of concerts that focus on a theme, the upcoming Fresh Sound music series will feature musicians from New York. Bonnie Wright, Director and Curator of Fresh Sound, recently returned from a six month sojourn in New York where she explored the city by attending 160 concerts, theater and dance events. Wright now wants to share with her fellow San Diegans some of the great music she experienced on her trip.

The first two concerts are March 6th and April 9th (see below for details). In May and June we hope to include New York musicians David Shively, percussionist; Mary Rowell, violinist and Eve Beglarian, composer, electronics; Evan Ziporyn, clarinets; and maybe Caleb Burham, violin; and Tristan Perich. – Dates to be determined, check back often.

Ticket Information
Please contact Bonnie Wright via email at bonniebwright@gmail.com or phone 619-987-6214

325 15th St. between J and K
Parking is easy: on the street and nearby $3.00 parking lots are located on Island between 14th and 15th and on K St. @ 14th. The big Padres parking lot is at K @ 13th.

He has been composing up a storm, both for his new group Ben Goldberg School, and getting ready for the world premiere of his Orphic Machine, based on the poetical writings of Allen Grossman – commissioned by Chamber Music America

BURN THIS IMAGE FILM SERIES AND DISCUSSION

DRIVE

$5 SUGGESTED DONATION
POPCORN & REFRESHMENTS AVAILABLE

It’s the rare film the burrows its way into the collective unconscious, but 2011′s neon-noir fairy tale/fever dream-of-a-film, Drive, the first American film by Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, seems to have done just that. The deceptively simple story of a stunt-driver-by-day/getaway-driver-by-night who finds himself embroiled in romantic notions-gone-wrong plays on Grimm’s Fairy Tale ideas of good vs. evil and the blurry line in-between, and has proven itself to be one of the most obssessed-over films of the past few years. The film will be preceded by trailers for Refn’s other films as well as influences on the films, a brief introduction the film, and a post open-forum discussion for anyone interested.

Craig Oliver is lifelong film enthusiast and budding filmmaker, among other things. After six years of hosting various film screenings and events at the Whistle Stop, Burn This Image marks his proper curatorial debut, in which he shares his obsession with film and its subconscious properties.

“The Cinema seems to have been invented to express the life of the subconscious, the roots of which penetrate poetry so deeply.”

-Luis Bunuel

*Next Burn This Image May 12. More details to follow.

JAMES MOORE
8PM
$15.00 and $10.00 students

James Moore will perform a strange and beautiful program of new music for National steel string guitar, featuring new transcriptions of the music of Lou Harrison, premieres from Larry Polansky and Molly Thompson, and selections from John Zorn’s Book of Heads.

James Moore

Moore is a versatile guitarist with multiple musical personalities. Performing on a variety of acoustic and electric guitars, banjos, and home-made instruments, James combines the sensitivity and lyricism from his classical training with a healthy dose of improvisation, theatrics, and experimentation.

You may have found James in a variety of unique performance situations including the Wulf in downtown LA premiering amplified banjo compositions; at the Pompidous Center in Paris as an on-stage musician and speaker; at the Bang on a Can Marathon directing an orchestra of hearing deprived guitarists; at the Fringe Theater in Hong Kong presenting apocalyptic multimedia works; at the Performa Festival playing Fred Frith’s music for multiple table-top guitars; at the Kitchen performing alongside rock musicians Bryce Dessner, Sufjan Stevens and Glenn Kotche; at the Barbican Center in London playing the music of Michael Gordon with Alarm Will Sound; at the Whitney Museum performing the music of Christian Marclay with Elliott Sharp; at the World Financial Center performing on ukulele with the pop/chamber group Clogs.

James is a member and co-director of Dither, an electric guitar quartet that has been gaining international recognition for precision playing and creative programming. Other projects include the folk-noise group Oliphant, the experimental band Passenger Fish, and the conceptually extreme chamber music project Ensemble de Sade. His work for theater has brought him to perform with Jennifer Walshe’s absurdist botany and video game opera The Geometry, Jacob Cooper’s electronic pop-tragedy Timberbrit, and the European tour of Richard Maxwell’s otherworldly music-theater piece Neutral Hero. James also regularly performs with Object Collection, the resident experimental ensemble at the Incubator Arts Project, formerly playwright Richard Foreman’s Ontological Theater. Recent album releases include William Brittelle’s lip-synched pop collage Mohair Time Warp and Matt Marks’s Christian nihilist musical The Little Death, Vol 1 on New Amsterdam Records, and Dither’s self-titled debut on Henceforth Records.

James received his Master of Music in Guitar Performance from the Yale School of Music, and his Bachelor of Arts in Guitar Performance and Electronic Music from UC Santa Cruz. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and currently resides in Brooklyn, NY
